CHAPTER TEN
âHEY, YOUâRE FREEZING. Letâs head back to the apartment,â Alex murmured into the spray of chestnut curls peeping out from under Eleanorâs beanie.
He breathed in a lungful of her scentâsweet, spicey and addictive.
âCan we just watch the sunset?â she asked, relaxing into his arms. She pointed across the park from their vantage point on Bow Bridge.
The bow-shaped Victorian arch that connected Cherry Hill to the Rambles in Central Park had been featured in a ton of romantic moviesânone of which heâd watched.
He probably should have been more wary when sheâd asked about the bridge, but he was too damn exhausted and content to be cautious and so here they were snuggled up like a couple of loved-up newly-wedsâwatching a sunset, of all things.
âI can see your penthouse from here,â she said, with the exhilaration that hadnât dimmed since too-early oâclock this morning when sheâd woken him up.
Sheâd lapped up every experience todayâchecking out the window displays in Bergdorf Goodmanâs on Fifth with exactly the same artless excitement as sheâd had when meeting a former US President and his First Lady at last nightâs party.
Heâd found it charming and cute and hot as hell. Watching her tear up during the climax of last nightâs show had floored him, the sheen in her eyes when heâd kissed her bare shoulder bladeâwhich had been driving him nuts all eveningâturning the pale blue of her irises into a rich sapphire. How could she be so open, so connected, so easily stirred by something that wasnât even real? And why the heck did he find it so captivating?
All heâd wanted to do after that was take her back to the apartment and re-establish the only connection between them that was real. But heâd forced himself to take her to the after-show party, knowing sheâd get a kick out of meeting the cast and the VIP guests. And needing to prove to himself he didnât have to jump her at every opportunity. To prove he wasnât so addicted to the endorphin rush, he couldnât control it for a few more hours. But by the time theyâd finally got back to his place, heâd been so desperate to hold her, to bury himself inside her, heâd torn the dress heâd paid a fortune for just to get to her soft flesh, to drive into her body and hear those staggered sobs in his ear as she shattered. And then he hadnât been able to stop touching her, stop needing her for hours afterwards.
Despite his protests this morning, heâd been happy to get out of the apartment today. He was becoming obsessed with her.
But teaching her how to ice-skate at the Bryant Park rinkâwhile tons of other couples did the sameâstrolling down Fifth and watching her freak out over each new window display, seeing her sink her teeth into a pastrami sandwich almost as big as her head and listening to her incessant chatter all day, the Scottish burr getting thicker the more excited she got, had been as captivating as watching her come apart in his arms.
